Cupcakes are simply a part of life. We accept them as such and few of us ever wonder where it’s come from. Its history is quite chequered, as we can trace back mention of cupcakes all the way to 1796 – although the actual term ‘cupcake’ wasn’t found until 1828. The recipes are simple and can also be learnt at a range of cookery courses designed to help you learn the art of baking.
In the early 19th century, a cupcake could be the cupcake we know today on a cupcake course, baked in small ramekins or moulds, but it was also used for cakes whose ingredients were measured by volume. The cup is still a valid measurement today, although it is more widely used in the US than it is elsewhere. These cakes still exist today as well, mostly in the form of pound cakes and heavier cakes because they are easily remembered; one cup of butter, two of sugar, three of flour, and four eggs. At a recent cake stall we came across these Tunbridge Wells Cupcake Makers who were selling fantastic cupcakes at a fete in Pembury, Kent.
This usage of the term ‘cupcake’ has fallen by the wayside in favour of the pound cake whose ingredients are measured by weight rather than by volume.
Cupcake shops as a trend began to rise in the US in the early 21st century, and took advantage of the memories associated with them; most people used to bake cupcakes with their mums and this remains a big draw. The ease with which they can be produced is also a factor in their success.
One thing is definitely for sure: cupcakes are unlikely to go anywhere anytime soon. These delightful little treats are easy to whisk up and will continue to enchant young and old.
